A nationwide outrage broke out at the Lincoln Memorial on Jan. 19. There were multiple groups of people protesting for different reasons. There were students from Covington Catholic High School, which is an all boys’ school in Northern Kentucky. There was also a small group of African American Hebrew Israelites that were preaching their beliefs. Both groups started making racist and inappropriate comments towards each other. Some boys from Covington were wearing MAGA (Make America Great Again) hats. The taunting only escalated. When the Israelites were making comments, the students decided to start chanting things they would say at school during sports events. Then Nathan Phillips, a Native American and also a Vietnam Veteran, started chanting and beating his drum in efforts to calm the tension. There were adolescent boys, middle-aged and elder men involved. The Covington students then surrounded Phillips and started mocking his chant.

  “To Jessica Travis, a Florida attorney who was at the memorial with her mother, the students looked out of control,” according to Washington Post.

  The students were out of control and continued to mock and chant.

  “The kids really went into a mob mentality, honestly,” she said, adding that she didn’t see any chaperones trying to control the situation.

  The student, Nick Sandmann, was directly in front of Phillip’s view, still chanting and beating his drum. You can see Sandmann smirking and at one point smiling at Phillips. Sandmann mentions in his statement that he was not intentionally making faces at the protester. You can hear some students mocking Phillips’ chant while jumping up and down and also saying negative comments. As time goes on, there is more information coming out about these people.
